Open Philanthropy

open source communities creating significant positive change that addresses a pressing social need

For the attendees of the OpenWest Conference, we’ve curated several opportunities to give back to the local community.  These service labs give you the opportunity to spend time during the conference with other like-minded people and help make something for a worthy cause.

Utah CC

Although many in Utah use technology on a daily basis, others lack access to the Internet, the devices to get connected, or the skills to use them. Without access and skills, people in our community may be left disconnected from friends and family, work opportunities, information and entertainment to improve their lives, and more.

Utah Communities Connect endeavors to bring awareness and action to our communities concerning information communication technologies around access, education, and devices. Asset maps will help UtahCC centralize information about free resources for residents, take inventory of local DI resources for decision makers, and understand where local assets meet local deficits. Data visualization maps will be used on the UtahCC website to increase awareness about digital equity in Utah.

Project SAFE

Geared to help the refugee communicate quickly and effectively with Law Enforcement, Project SAFE is a mobile application that is loaded onto the phones of the refugee community. The app allows them to send their location and the general nature of the emergency and to have that communication be received to 911 dispatch in English.

In collaboration with the International Rescue Committee.
